What's in a lip balm?

The purpose of all lip balms, even those called ointments or butters, is to protect the lips. They contain moisturizing ingredients that prevent moisture loss (such as petroleum jelly, shea butter or lanolin). Wax is added to help the lip balm stick to the lips. Waxes can even prevent tinted lip balms from having the shine of lip gloss or the intensity of lipstick color. 

The camphor and menthol in medicinal lip balms act as mild anesthetics and soothe irritated lips. They are also the ingredients that give lip balms their cool, tingling sensation.

Your lips need protection from the sun, just like the rest of your skin.

Some lip balms contain sunscreens up to SPF 30 and antioxidants such as coenzyme Q10. Other common ingredients are vitamins C and E, which neutralize free radicals that damage skin collagen and elastin.
